The Government of Ghana has formally shown support for an ambitious climate action initiative led by Queen Nihad Titiaka Oases Ibrahim, Winner of Ghana’s Most Beautiful 2024 and Founder of EcoGreen Oases Legacy. The project, known as “Empowering Communities for Climate Action,” was launched on 7 May 2025 at the UPSA Auditorium, with support from key government ministries, agencies, and international partners.
This wide-reaching initiative focuses on sustainable waste management, afforestation, clean cooking, youth empowerment, and climate justice, aligning with Ghana’s national development goals. Officials have described it as a much-needed intervention with the potential to create lasting change.
Government endorsement and high-level support
Delivering the keynote address at the launch, Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Minister for Labour, Jobs & Employment, praised Queen Titiaka’s leadership. He emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting such initiatives, which align with the vision of the John Mahama administration.
“This project reflects the future we are building under the vision of the John Mahama administration—one of sustainability, inclusion, and opportunity,” the Minister said. “We are proud to support this young Ghanaian woman who is using her platform not for personal gain but for national transformation.”
The event saw representation from various government bodies and dignitaries, including the representative of Hon. Yusif Sulemana, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources; Prof. Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, Former UPSA Vice Chancellor, who served as Chairman of the Occasion; and His Royal Majesty Yiram Ajawuleh Okitikata I, Accra Gonja Chief.
Also present were Hon. Sammi Awuku, MP for Akuapem North; officials from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Forestry Commission, EPA, NLA, UPSA, UG-CCReS, GIZ, Ghana European Centre, Vitamilk, and the embassies of Spain and India.
A comprehensive approach to climate action
Queen Titiaka’s project operates under the EcoGreen Oases Legacy platform and focuses on five key areas:
- Waste-to-Wealth upcycling training: Equipping youth and women with skills to turn waste materials into profitable products.
- Clean cookstove distribution: Reducing reliance on firewood and improving air quality.
- Afforestation campaigns: Aiming to plant 20,000 trees to combat deforestation.
- Sustainable school block construction in Wombong: Providing environmentally friendly educational infrastructure.
- Support for vulnerable communities: Offering aid to marginalised groups, including those in witch camps and orphanages.
Speaking at the launch, Queen Titiaka highlighted the deeper purpose of the initiative. “This is not just about trees and stoves,” she stated. “It’s about dignity, jobs, climate justice, and making environmental protection everyone’s business.”
Aiming for Lasting Impact
The “Empowering Communities for Climate Action” project is expected to benefit over 2,500 Ghanaians in its first year, particularly women, young people, and marginalised groups. It also contributes to Ghana’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and supports the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
With strong national and international backing, Queen Titiaka made a passionate appeal to Ghanaians to join the cause: “Let’s build a greener, more inclusive Ghana together.”
Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo and other senior officials have praised the initiative as a much-needed, youth-driven solution to the nation’s environmental challenges.
