The Government of Canada has announced plans to invest up to $5.45 million to support the growth of the Northern Super League (NSL), the country’s first professional women’s soccer league. The announcement was made during the NSL Final at BMO Field, capping a three-day celebration of Canadian talent, fan festivals, and community programming.
The Northern Super League has rapidly captured the attention of sports fans across Canada, inspiring a new generation of female athletes while creating significant economic impact for local communities. The funding, provided through Canada’s Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), will be used to upgrade facilities across the country and strengthen women’s professional sport as a driver of community engagement and economic growth.
Before the championship match, several federal ministers joined NSL officials to highlight the significance of the investment. The Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario, stated: “Today represents progress, not only on the field, but for our economy and our communities. The Northern Super League is changing the game for women in sport, inspiring communities and strengthening our economy. Our government is proud to have supported this incredible event and to be investing in the continued growth of the league.”
The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, added: “Women’s sport is rising on the world stage, and Canada is ready to lead. The Northern Super League brings jobs, tourism, and investment to our communities, while empowering youth through the power of sport.”
Other ministers echoed the sentiment, emphasising the league’s role in creating pathways for athletes, empowering the next generation, and boosting local economies. The Honourable Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport), said: “The incredible growth of women’s sport, brilliantly highlighted by the Northern Super League’s inaugural final today, clearly demonstrates its power to drive our economy, unite us, and showcase Canada’s strengths.”
Diana Matheson, NSL Founder and Chief Growth Officer, noted that the League is focused on building pathways that turn dreams into reality. “We’re proud to build alongside partners like the Government of Canada who share that vision. Sport has an important role to play as we invest in Canada’s future – and women’s sport, one of the fastest-growing areas in the country, is proud to invest and build in communities across the country.”
The NSL features six founding clubs, Halifax Tides FC, Montreal Roses FC, Ottawa Rapid FC, AFC Toronto, Calgary Wild FC and Vancouver Rise FC, and has been developed with global best practices to champion Canadian excellence, equity, and inclusion in sport. The inaugural championship weekend is expected to draw thousands of visitors and generate significant economic activity for the Greater Toronto Area.
