The Municipality of Queretaro has teamed up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to introduce Girls Tech Mexico, a new initiative aimed at inspiring young women to pursue science and technology careers. The programme officially kicked off with more than 300 students from COBAQ Plantel 1 participating in the first Amazon Girls’ Tech Day, marking the launch of the scheme’s inaugural edition in the country.

Rodrigo Ruiz, Director of Innovation and Technology for the Municipality of Queretaro, said the collaboration reflects the city’s broader efforts to strengthen digital inclusion and innovation. “Queretaro is today a technological seedbed at the national level. This collaboration with Amazon reflects the commitment to provide equal opportunities for young women and to drive local talent toward a digital future,” says Ruiz.

Running from November 2025 to March 2026, the programme will be held across 10 public high schools in Queretaro. It will include a series of hands-on sessions designed to close the gender gap in technology and build digital skills among female students. Activities will cover introductory programming and robotics workshops, binary-coded bracelet creation, Arduino device experiments, and talks from women working in the tech industry.

Students who complete the sessions will be awarded certificates recognising their participation in the first Girls Tech Mexico cohort. The initiative aims to spark early interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) among girls and young women, while helping create clearer pathways into tech-focused careers.

The launch comes as Queretaro cements its position as one of Mexico’s leading technology hubs. The state currently hosts 15 data centres, with 37 more planned in the coming years, supported by accumulated investments of around US$12 billion since 2009. The upcoming AWS Region in Mexico, expected to represent an additional US$5 billion investment, will further enhance Queretaro’s standing within the country’s digital infrastructure network.

Through this joint effort, Amazon and the Municipality of Queretaro aim to expand access to technology education and promote gender equality in the sector. By reaching students across public high schools, Girls Tech Mexico is expected to engage hundreds of young women in its first edition, helping build a more inclusive and digitally skilled generation in Queretaro.
