The UAE has introduced an innovative Blue Residency Visa, a 10-year residency permit designed for individuals committed to environmental sustainability. Announced earlier this May, during a Cabinet meeting led by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this initiative underscores the nation’s focus on sustainability for the year 2024.

What is the Blue Residency Visa?

The Blue Residency Visa is a groundbreaking program aimed at those who have made significant contributions to environmental protection. This visa recognizes efforts in various areas, including marine and land conservation, air quality management, sustainability technologies, and the circular economy. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasized, “Our national focus on sustainability is unwavering, and the Blue Residency Visa reflects this commitment.”

Who Can Apply?

The UAE encourages applications from a diverse group of environmental champions, including:

  • Sustainability Advocates: Individuals working on environmental initiatives within the UAE and internationally through various organizations and companies.
  • Award Winners: Recipients of prestigious global awards acknowledging their environmental efforts.
  • Environmental Activists: Leaders who have spearheaded impactful environmental campaigns and movements.
  • Pioneering Researchers: Distinguished researchers in the field of environmental science and innovation.

How to Apply

Applications for the Blue Residency Visa can be submitted directly through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (FAICCPS). The process also allows for nominations and recommendations by relevant organizations and authorities within the UAE, promoting a collaborative effort in championing environmental conservation.

  1. Direct Application: Submit applications via the FAICCPS.
  2. Nominations: Be nominated by competent authorities within the UAE.
  3. Recommendations: Obtain recommendations from relevant organizations or authorities.

Broader Context

The introduction of the Blue Residency Visa is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to promote sustainability, as reflected in the recently approved National Youth Agenda 2031. This agenda aims to empower young people, enhance their scientific skills, strengthen national identity, and foster international representation. Additionally, a new framework for classifying universities and higher education institutions focuses on academic quality, graduate employability, research strength, and global partnerships.

Existing Residency Options

The UAE has also introduced other long-term residency options, such as the Golden Visa and the Green Visa. The Golden Visa offers a 10-year residency for investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, outstanding students and graduates, and humanitarian pioneers. The Green Visa provides a five-year residency for skilled professionals, freelancers, investors, and entrepreneurs.

A Top Destination for Migrants

The UAE continues to be a leading destination for migrants, especially from India. According to the ‘World Migration Report 2024’ by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), there were 3.47 million Indians in the UAE in 2020, making it the top destination for Indian migrants.

Through the Blue Residency Visa, the UAE is setting a global example in environmental stewardship and sustainable development, rewarding those who contribute significantly to protecting our planet.
