Primark, the renowned global fashion and leisure retailer, is set to invest €40 million in Portugal, fueling its ambitious growth plans in the country. This investment will lead to the creation of over 500 new jobs and the opening of four new stores in different cities, alongside the expansion of the existing Colombo store in Lisbon.

Primark’s expansion aligns with the celebration of its 15th anniversary in Portugal, marked by the increase of its store count to 14 and a 30% boost in sales space. The retailer, which entered the Portuguese market in May 2009 with a store at the UBBO Shopping Centre in Amadora, currently operates ten stores across the nation, from Braga to Loulé.

The new investment will see Primark opening stores in the Allegro Shopping Centre (Montijo), Centro Comercial Espaço (Guimaraes), Palácio Do Gelo Shopping (Viseu), and Covilha City Centre Retail Park (Covilhã). These new locations will be the first in Portugal to feature self-service checkout lanes, enhancing customer convenience and experience. The stores are expected to open within the next two to three years.

In addition, the Colombo store in Lisbon will unveil its expansion on June 21st, featuring an updated look and offering a wider range of fashion, beauty, and home products.

Nelson Ribeiro, head of sales at Primark Portugal, expressed his enthusiasm about the expansion: “Primark is continuing to spread in Portugal. Since opening our first store 15 years ago, we have built and grown such a strong business here with a huge base of loyal Primark customers. We are excited to keep growing, investing in more stores, creating even more jobs, and introducing even more Portuguese shoppers to our incredible style and value.”

Primark aims to have 530 stores worldwide by 2026 as part of its extensive growth strategy, which includes significant investments in both new and existing markets. The recent opening of its first store in Budapest, Hungary, highlights the retailer’s ongoing commitment to expanding its global footprint.
