The General Federation of Oman Workers (GFOW) has launched a nationwide media campaign titled “A Friendly Environment for Women Working in the Private Sector”, aimed at encouraging private companies to implement policies that support women in balancing their professional and family responsibilities.

The campaign, led by GFOW’s Working Women’s Committee, was officially announced during two discussion sessions held on 20 and 21 October. These sessions examined the current situation of Omani women employed in the private sector, focusing on the implications of the new Social Protection Law, retirement systems, and women’s participation in leadership positions.

Suad al Sulaymi, Chair of the Working Women’s Committee, highlighted the importance of inclusive workplace cultures that enable women to advance professionally without sacrificing family obligations. She stated, “We need a deeper understanding of the challenges facing working women across sectors and must develop frameworks that enable them to reach leadership positions and upgrade their skills in line with today’s professional demands.”

The campaign seeks to raise awareness among employers about the social and economic benefits of gender-inclusive workplaces. It also encourages companies to adopt fair and flexible work policies that promote equality and support women’s career growth.

During the event, Khadija al Ajmi, Head of the Legal Review and Contracts Department at the Social Protection Fund, delivered a presentation outlining available legal services and safeguards designed to protect working women in Oman.

Dr Badriya al Wahaibi, Director of the Information and Research Centre at the State Council, commended the GFOW’s initiative, noting that its research provided “evidence-based recommendations aligned with Oman Vision 2040 objectives and international labour conventions.” She also recognised recent advances in maternity insurance and parental benefits as positive developments for women’s labour rights.

GFOW reaffirmed that Oman’s Labour Law plays a key role in promoting women-friendly work environments, particularly for working mothers. The legislation ensures maternity protection, fair treatment, and the right to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Women’s rights under Oman’s Labour Law include:

  • 98 days of paid maternity leave;
  • Paid entitlement in cases of foetal death after 25 weeks;
  • Retention of full maternity benefits when changing employers during leave;
  • An option to request an additional 98 days of unpaid leave;
  • Equal leave rights for women assuming custody of infants under three months of unknown parentage.
