Malaysia took a significant step toward becoming a regional leader in artificial intelligence (AI) by launching its first-ever national AI office. The new office is designed to oversee AI policy-making, address regulatory challenges, and help steer the country’s development as a hub for AI innovation in Southeast Asia.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, speaking at the launch, called it “another historical moment in our digital transformation journey.” This move follows a surge of investment in Malaysia from global tech companies, which have poured billions of dollars into the country over the past year. These firms are focused on building the critical infrastructure needed to meet the growing demand for AI and cloud services.
The national AI office will serve as a central agency for all AI-related matters, handling strategic planning, research and development, and providing regulatory oversight. According to the office’s website, it aims to coordinate efforts across the government, private sector, and academia to foster a thriving AI ecosystem.
The launch of the AI office is part of Malaysia’s broader digital transformation efforts. In 2024, the country’s economy was significantly boosted by digital ventures, which contributed 71.1 billion ringgit (approximately $16.06 billion) in approved investments within the information and communications sector. This move underscores Malaysia’s commitment to becoming a key player in the global digital economy.
