General Motors has achieved another monthly high in U.S. electric vehicle sales, with the Chevrolet Equinox EV leading the charge.
The automaker sold over 19,000 electric vehicles in July, marking a year-on-year increase of more than 115%. The Equinox EV topped the list with more than 8,500 units sold—making it not only the best sales month ever for the model, but also the strongest single-month performance for any non-Tesla EV in the U.S. market.
Rising EV demand is being partly driven by the approaching end of the U.S. federal consumer tax credit scheme. Analysts predict that EVs made up roughly 8.5% of total car sales in July. Within this shifting market landscape, GM’s electric vehicle range is steadily expanding and gaining market share.
The Equinox EV is proving particularly attractive to new customers drawn to its affordability and a range of over 315 miles.
GM claimed the position of the second-largest EV seller in the U.S. last year and is continuing to outpace overall market growth. The firm reported a more than 100% increase in EV sales in the second quarter.
Isidro Bomnin, vice president of operations at Bomnin Automotive, which runs two Chevrolet dealerships in South Florida, said, “The first thing for Equinox is the look and design. And once they get behind the wheel, they fall in love.” He added, “We’re seeing a lot of conquest buyers from other brands, and younger buyers.”
General Motors is scheduled to release third-quarter U.S. sales figures on 1 October.
