Brazil’s Supreme Court has overturned a ban on Elon Musk’s X, which had been suspended due to a controversy surrounding misinformation.
“I authorize the immediate return of the activities” Judge Alexandre de Moraes stated in his ruling, following the company’s payment of millions in fines for not adhering to multiple court orders. He ordered Brazil’s communications regulator to restore access to the platform within 24 hours.
Through its Global Affairs account, X expressed its pride in returning to Brazil and affirmed its commitment to upholding freedom of speech in compliance with local laws in the countries where it operates.
The platform previously known as Twitter faced suspension in Brazil, a key market, at the end of August due to a dispute over online disinformation linked to the 2022 election campaign. Additionally, X had not appointed a legal representative in the country, which is a legal requirement.
As of now, Twitter is blocked in nine countries around the world, impacting the ability of individuals to communicate freely on the platform. These countries include China, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Tanzania, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. In each of these nations, access to Twitter is either completely restricted or heavily regulated, which significantly limits the flow of information and the opportunity for open dialogue among users.
