Barclays names Sahana Athreya as Global Head of Data Science and Applied AI

The former hedge fund specialist will oversee the integration of advanced analytics and alternative data into the firm’s research output.

Barclays Research has appointed Sahana Athreya to the position of Global Head of Data Science & Applied AI. The bank announced the New York-based appointment on 14 April 2026. In her new role Athreya is responsible for leading the firm’s strategy regarding artificial intelligence and advanced analytics. This move comes as institutional investors increasingly seek data-led analysis to inform their decisions.

Athreya will collaborate with technology teams and analysts to integrate AI and alternative data into the research platform. Her team aims to produce unique research reports and develop AI tools for clients. They will also provide guidance on how investors can use these technologies within their own frameworks. This work is intended to complement the existing macro and thematic coverage provided by the bank.

Before moving to Barclays Athreya managed machine learning and data science projects at major hedge funds. Her previous experience includes roles at Millennium Management and Eisler Capital. Her work within the quantamental investment space has received significant industry praise. In 2022 she was featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Finance list. She has also won several other accolades including the CBIZ Women Transforming Business Emerging Leadership Award and the Data Science Professional of the Year.

Brad Rogoff who serves as Global Head of Research at Barclays commented on the new hire.
