Accelerating inclusion and diversity: The role of AI in women’s progression at work

Artificial intelligence (AI) has dramatically transformed the business landscape in recent years, enhancing innovation and decision-making processes. However, one of the less-talked-about benefits of AI is its potential to promote inclusion and diversity, particularly in breaking down barriers that have long hindered women’s advancement in the workplace.

When applied responsibly and with human oversight, AI can broaden talent pools, help reduce bias in recruitment, and interrupt real-time bias in talent management systems. It can also make communication and training more inclusive, paving the way for more accessible collaboration in emerging environments like the metaverse.

Despite the advancements, women still constitute only 22% of AI professionals worldwide. According to the World Economic Forum, out of approximately 300,000 AI specialists globally, around 66,000 are women, highlighting a significant gender disparity in the industry. Bridging this gap requires concerted effort.

Increasing Gender Diversity

To foster greater gender diversity in AI, several essential steps can be taken by companies and the community:

1. Support STEM Education

The roots of the gender imbalance in AI often be traced back to childhood. Cultural and social factors have perpetuated the stereotype that girls are less adept at subjects like maths and science, discouraging many from pursuing STEM fields. As a result, by the time these girls reach university, they often opt for other paths, making it challenging to shift gears later.

To combat this, organizations like the Girl Scouts have been actively promoting STEM education. They aim to engage young girls and bolster their interest and confidence in these areas. The Girl Scouts have set a goal to add 2.5 million young women to the STEM workforce by 2025, collaborating with industry leaders to equip these future pioneers.

2. Showcase Female AI Trailblazers

Visibility matters. Highlighting successful women in AI and STEM fields can challenge stereotypes and inspire the next generation. It’s crucial to ensure that discussions about AI include equal representation of women, whether in conferences, social media, or public forums. By showcasing female role models, companies can attract more women into the field and cultivate a culture of inclusivity.

3. Mentor Women for Leadership Roles

Mentorship plays a pivotal role in guiding women who navigate careers in AI. Historically, mentorship opportunities have often come from associations or academic settings rather than within organizations. However, there’s a shift happening. AI-driven apps are now connecting entry and mid-level employees with mentors, regardless of their location. These initiatives have shown promising results, with mentees reporting significantly increased clarity about their career paths and feeling more equipped to achieve their goals.

4. Create Equal Opportunities

Many companies’ recruitment processes contain implicit biases that can hinder women’s entry and advancement in AI. These biases manifest in the language used in job descriptions and the lack of diversity in hiring panels. Moreover, there is often a lack of clarity about the various roles in AI and the paths available to women.

In North America, women occupy 25% of AI roles, which translates to about 37,500 women out of an estimated 150,000 AI professionals. Meanwhile, in the European Union, women represent 24% of AI professionals, amounting to approximately 48,000 women out of 200,000 AI specialists. These figures reflect regional variations but underline a consistent need for companies to strive for at least 50% female representation in high-growth AI roles. By breaking down barriers, organizations can foster a more inclusive workplace culture, enhancing both diversity and the performance of AI systems.

5. Ensure a Gender-Equal Reward System

Fair pay is fundamental to attracting and retaining women in AI roles. Many women in tech have considered leaving their positions due to inadequate compensation and limited opportunities for advancement. Companies need to be transparent about gender pay gaps within their AI workforce and establish concrete plans to address these disparities. By committing to equal pay for equal work, organizations can help retain talent and create a more inclusive environment.

Career Paths in AI for Women

There are numerous opportunities for women interested in AI. This rapidly evolving field offers diverse career paths, including:

  • Researcher in AI: Women can engage in cutting-edge research, developing new algorithms and enhancing AI models in areas like machine learning and natural language processing. Notably, women constitute only 18% of AI researchers globally, meaning out of around 80,000 researchers, only about 14,400 are women.
  • Expert in Data Science: Data scientists leverage AI to analyze vast datasets, uncover insights, and build predictive models.
  • Engineer in AI: With a background in engineering, women can focus on designing and implementing AI systems, ensuring their effective use across applications.
  • Advisory for Ethical AI: As ethical considerations in AI gain prominence, women can specialize in guiding organizations to develop fair and transparent AI practices.
  • AI Product Manager: Those with both technical and managerial skills can thrive as product managers, collaborating with teams to successfully launch AI-driven products.

As the demand for AI talent rises, the need for women in this sector becomes increasingly urgent. While there’s still a significant gender imbalance in areas such as AI research and leadership, the growth potential is immense.

Addressing these disparities presents a challenge, but it is one that women can successfully meet, paving the way for a more equitable future in AI and beyond.
