Helaina and Nestlé partner to develop new bioactive proteins for infant nutrition

The initial focus centers on early life development, whilst Helaina simultaneously scales its bioidentical human lactoferrin product, effera, to target broader health and wellness sectors across various life stages.

Nestlé and biotechnology specialist Helaina have established a multi-year strategic alliance to research the applications of new bioactive proteins within infant nutrition. The corporate agreement unites Nestlé’s global infrastructure in early-life nutritional research with Helaina’s advanced precision fermentation processing platform.

While the primary objective of the corporate deal centres on early-stage human development, Helaina is independently progressing a portfolio of bioactive proteins for alternative age groups. This pipeline is led by its signature product, effera human lactoferrin.

“Nestlé has always been at the forefront of advancing scientific knowledge on key nutrients and bioactives that are important during early life, including their interactions with the gut microbiome and the immune system. Collaborations with external partners such as Helaina, form an integral part of our broader open innovation strategy to deepen scientific understanding in this field, while gaining access to emerging technologies,” stated Isabelle Bureau‑Franz, Head of the Nestlé Product Technology Center for Nutrition & Health.

The corporate tie-up provides Helaina with industrial manufacturing scale and clinical validation. “We believe new bioactive proteins present a significant innovation in nutrition right now. At Helaina, we’re focused on manufacturing these bioactives at scale with clinical credibility and together with Nestlé we can uncover new developments that advance early-life nutrition,” said Laura Katz, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Helaina.

Lactoferrin is a major protein found in human colostrum and breast milk, frequently dubbed a miracle molecule due to its multifunctional biological roles. The substance regulates iron distribution to restrict pathogen survival whilst aiding the stabilisation of the gut microbiome. Additionally, it influences adaptive and innate immune responses, cellular signaling and gut barrier protection. Research indicates further potential applications in brain health, healthy aging and inflammatory management.

Commercial lactoferrin has historically been sourced from bovine milk, which shares only 70 per cent structural homology with the human equivalent. These biological differences can impede how effectively the human body identifies, digests and absorbs the bovine protein. The effera platform bypasses these limitations by delivering a bioidentical structure that provides superior digestive stability and intestinal absorption compared to the bovine variation. The precision fermentation manufacturing model also ensures consistency and sustainability benefits. Helaina intends to market the ingredient across consumer segments, including active nutrition, longevity, women’s health, skin and hair health.
