Saudi Arabia has appointed Dr.Muneerah B. Almahasheer as Director General of Education for the Eastern Province, marking the first time a woman has held the senior regional post in the kingdom. The announcement was made by Minister of Education Yousef Al-Benyan, in a move widely seen as a milestone for women’s leadership in the public sector.
Dr. Muneerah, a highly respected academic and a pioneer in e-learning, previously served as Dean of E-Learning and Distance Learning at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University. She is recognised for her contributions to digital transformation, accessibility, and AI policy development for higher education, experience that is expected to shape the future of the province’s education system.
Her appointment is significant not only for gender representation but also for its policy implications, signalling a strong push towards modernisation in line with Vision 2030. Dr. Muneerah is expected to prioritise teacher upskilling, the expansion of digital classrooms, and the introduction of AI-based personalised learning programmes, with a particular focus on improving access for rural and special-needs schools.
According to local reports, her initial focus will likely centre on three key areas: holding stakeholder consultations with principals, teachers and education partners to identify urgent needs; accelerating the rollout of e-learning initiatives and professional development for teachers; and ensuring equitable distribution of digital resources across urban and remote schools.
The Eastern Province, one of Saudi Arabia’s most populous regions with extensive school networks, is set to benefit from Dr. Muneerah’s expertise in educational technology. Her leadership is expected to help transform learning outcomes and support the Ministry’s broader goals of improving quality, inclusion, and innovation in the national education system.
