The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) has expressed strong support for a proposed federal measure aimed at increasing transparency in pregnancy counselling services nationwide. This initiative would require charities that assist pregnant women to disclose whether they offer access to abortion, birth control, or referrals for these services.

Dr. Lynn Murphy-Kaulbeck, President of the SOGC, emphasised the importance of supporting women who choose to terminate a pregnancy. She stated, “As physicians, we have a duty to support women who choose to terminate a pregnancy and to refer them to appropriate abortion services. We expect the same transparency from organizations offering pregnancy counselling. This proposed initiative is a positive step toward ensuring women in vulnerable situations can make informed decisions about their reproductive health.”

The SOGC believes that this measure would not only enhance trust in reproductive healthcare but also promote accountability among organisations serving pregnant women. Women must understand from the outset whether they will receive support should they decide to end their pregnancy. The need for open dialogue and transparency regarding women’s reproductive rights and services is vital, especially in protecting women from misleading information that could hinder their access to essential healthcare.
